How the balloon works
Once in place, the balloon is filled with saline to partially fill the stomach area. This helps you to feel less hungry and consume smaller portions of food as you experience a similar satisfaction as you would have previously experienced after consuming a larger meal.
Most weight is lost in the first three months, but because the intragastric balloon stays in your stomach for six months, you will learn to eat the right amount of food to maintain your new weight long-term.
During those six months (and after) you will work together with our nutritional support team and weight loss experts on your own personalized plan.
The plan is designed to:
- Overcome the challenges of retraining your appetite
- Help you to adopt new nutritional habits
- Establish a reasonable exercise routine
- Help you succeed and stay motivated
- The intragastric balloon procedure has been a clinically accepted weight loss treatment internationally for many years.
These important educational aspects of the Program involve the nutrition and lifestyle changes that you must follow in order to achieve long-term success. Your regular meetings with the support team will continue for six months after the intragastric balloon is removed as it is essential to set the foundations for long term healthy habits in the future.
The second six months
Removal of the intragastric balloon takes around 20-30 minutes, similar to when you had it inserted; you will be sedated and your doctor will remove the sterile salt water from the intragastric balloon before removing the deflated balloon from your stomach.
It is very important that you continue seeing your Advanced Laparoscopic support team on a regular basis during this final six months of the program as this will set the foundations for the future.
What results can you expect?
People participating in the gastric balloon managed weight loss program can expect significant weight loss in the first six months*. The amount of weight you lose and how you maintain that weight loss will depend on how well you adopt lifestyle changes related to eating and exercise.
